Originally founded in Washington DC by San Francisco native, Chaz Cabonce, The GroovMekanex is now going into their 20th year. Although they are known as SF’s premier “Locking” crew, the individual dancers themselves are well versed in other styles such as b-boying, popping, strutting, house, and hip-hop.
Crew members have worked and performed for Rennie Harris Puremovement, San Francisco Int’l Hip-Hop Dance Fest, Malcom X Jazz Festival, World of Dance, and the Culture Shock DC East Coast Dance Concert to name a few. Members have also battled at solo/crew competitions such as R-16 (Korea), KOD (Keep On Dancing), All The Way Live USA, How The West Was Won, Mighty 4, Step Ya Game Up, Homeland Jam, and World Street Dance Battle (France). They’ve choreographed and directed shows for Rock The School Bells, SF Hip-Hop Film Festival, and City Dance OnStage.
Other crew members have taught workshops for President Obama’s children at the White House while other members have the capacity to teach multiple styles of dance. Hence, The GroovMekanex is no exception to loving the spot light. However, the main mission of the group is to constantly be involved with the street dance community and culture whether it is performing to help raise funds for good causes or simply volunteering to help during activities. They always uphold their purpose for the love of dancing and just having fun.
